Genghis Khan and His Novel Army

Before Genghis Khan came upon the scene, the Mongolian tribes were organized in fractious and raiding tribes, given to warring upon each other and played against each other by their Chinese neighbors. Yet, twenty years after Genghis Khan stepped upon the stage, they were a united nation awaiting orders to conquer the world. How did Genghis Khan take these individuals and forge a nation from their numbers?

The key to Genghis Khan’s success lies in his ability to think outside tribal and family lines. All previous leaders had always rewarded their own blood kin and kept the spoils of war to those within their tribe, yet Genghis Khan showed a remarkable ability to transcend these limits and think beyond the norm. What he did was adopt practices that were aimed specifically at breaking tribal and family lines of loyalty so that his new soldiers were loyal to each other and not just their aristocrats and friends.

The key innovation that Genghis Khan implemented was to reorganize his tribes into different groups. Whereas before everybody had fought in a chaotic mass, Genghis Khan broke everybody down into groups of ten, each group composed of different members of different tribes. They were then told that they were responsible for the actions and fates of every member of that group, so that they could not leave the battlefield without all their numbers being present, and were punished collectively for the misdeeds of one man.

Each group of ten was then grouped along with nine others to form a group of one hundred, which were in turn grouped into larger groups of a thousand. This decimal system was completely innovative, and was coincidentally the same system used by the founder of Athens two thousand years before to organize the most powerful of the Grecian city states.
As has been shown, the key to Genghis Khan’s ability to forge a united and powerful nation out of a group of disparate tribes was his ability to see beyond tribal and blood lines and force his men to act and depend upon strangers. When their fates were wedded to the other nine in their group, they quickly began to think as a group and not as individuals.
